Q: There are many anti-violence-against women organizations. What sets Zonta apart?

A: In addition to Zonta Toronto’s numerous local service and advocacy projects, Zonta International is active around the planet.

-Zonta has a renowned Fellowship for women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences and aerospace-related engineering.

-And a Scholarship for women pursuing undergraduate and Master’s degrees in business management

-And an Award established to encourage more young women to participate in public and political life by recognizing them for their volunteer leadership and dedication to the empowerment of women

–We support projects in Madagascar, Syria and Jordan that promote resilience and empowerment in women and girls.

-We support projects that seek to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, and/or health status of women in developing countries or countries in transition; specifically Zonta International has committed US$2,000,000 to UNICEF USA to support the UNICEF/UNFPA Global Programme to Accelerate Action to End Child Marriage in 12 countries

Q:That sounds amazing but I’m really busy and can’t join full-time. Is it OK to volunteer for one event?

A: Absolutely! We’re delighted to welcome volunteers.

Q: I’m not sure I have the skills to join.

A: Our members are professionals come from all walks of life; however, the most important qualities of a Zontian are curiosity, passion, loyalty, and commitment. If you have at least one of those you’ll fit in just fine!

Q: I’m a high school student. Am I too young to join Zonta?

A: Not at all! You are the perfect age.

Zonta’s Z Club program helps high school students (as well as those in college and university) develop leadership skills, explore career options and participate in local and international community service projects. With the help of experienced Zonta sponsors, who provide resources, information and guidance, Z club members (high school students) and Golden Z club members (college or university students) work to improve their society and the world. Z club and Golden Z club members plan, organize and participate in unique activities designed to meet the needs of members, their schools and the community, while emphasizing an international outlook and strong international relations. There are currently more than 320 Z clubs and Golden Z clubs in 20 countries around the world. Amazing, right?

Q: What is the cost of membership?

A: Zonta International includes paying annual dues that support all three levels of the organization: International, District, and Club. In Canada, it’s $275 for a full-year renewing membership.

Q: I’m a man. Can I join Zonta Toronto?

A: Yes! Both men and women make an invaluable contribution to Zonta Toronto!

Q: I want to donate $5. How will Zonta Toronto use my money? And do you issue tax receipts?

A: Yes, we are a registered charity and issue tax receipts. Your donation fully supports organizations we have partnered with such as Times Change Women’s Employment Service and White Ribbon in Toronto; and other organizations working to end violence against women.

Q: Your organization has an unusual name. What does it mean?

A: Zonta is derived from Lakota, a language spoken by Native-American Sioux tribes. The word means honest and trustworthy. It was adopted in 1919 to symbolize the combined qualities of honesty and trust, inspiration and the ability to work together for service and world understanding.
