Zonta Toronto works with White Ribbon to show our commitment for ending violence against women on several initiatives including the annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser, which is a one-mile walk through Toronto’s financial district in heels. This year’s walk was held on May 30th, 2018 in David Pecaud Square.
White Ribbon is the world’s largest movement of men and boys working to end violence against women. Starting in 1991, White Ribbon asked men to wear white ribbons as a pledge to never commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women and girls. Since then the White Ribbon has spread to more than 60 countries around the world.
Zonta Toronto, along with five other clubs in Ontario, created the ‘Zonta Says No’ Award in 2014, to be awarded annually to a man and / or organization, working actively to end violence against women and girls. The 2014 award recipients were a high-school principal in Hamilton and the Toronto Argonauts in recognition of the team’s “Huddle Up” program in schools.
Established in 1938 in honour of famed pilot and Zontian, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship is awarded annually to women pursuing Ph.D./doctoral degrees in aerospace-related sciences or aerospace-related engineering. The Fellowship of US$10,000, awarded to 30 Fellows around the globe each year, may be used at any university or college offering accredited post-graduate courses and degrees in these fields.

In the UK, the Women’s Equality Party is reclaiming London streets for women via technology.
As Zontians, it is important to see how other groups are advocating for women and girls in new ways. The Women’s Equality Party in the United Kingdom is asking women in London to pinpoint the locations of sexual violence on an online map. The #WEcount campaign is creating this map to give a visual representation of the issue and to show how common the problem is in their community. Through use of the existing technology in Google Maps, this campaign also lets survivors know that they are not alone. Caitlin Ryan, executive chief director of Cheil London, says, “we wanted women to feel empowered to make their own mark on a map of London as way of reclaiming the streets.”
